European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
