The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.
Video review technology will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Competitors will gain the right to challenge particular rulings made by the official, echoing the system already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This move arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.
A Recent Example
A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
